Art Pottery

In general, pottery refers to any ware for which a functional use is intended, and is one of our most enduring cultural representations. As one of the oldest and most sensual of all crafts, forming clay on a wheel has evolved as a way to express our aesthetic sense of emotion and beauty, otherwise known as Art Pottery. Any handmade pottery that is decorated or glazed by artists using special, controlled effects is considered Art Pottery.

Handmade pottery is an art form that starts with coils, flat slabs or solid balls of clay that are formed by handbuilding or on a potter’s wheel. Handbuilding, although slower than wheel throwing, offers the potter a great degree of control over the size and shape of each detail and is often used to create one-of-kind pieces of handmade pottery. Wheel throwing is very useful for making precisely matched art pottery pieces, but is also conducive to spontaneous and uniquely designed pieces of handmade pottery. After the piece is formed it may be glazed and decorated in a number of ways and fired at a variety of temperatures and frequencies to produce the desired art pottery effects. Firing also produces permanent, irreversible changes in the body of the clay.

Rakuyaki or Raku pottery is created using a 16th century Japanese inspired method of firing that creates a variety of unpredictable fire and smoke patterns that may include sensational metallic and/or crackled effects. The Raku pottery firing method involves drawing a red hot piece from the kiln and placing it in masses of combustible material, like straw, sawdust, wood chips, or newspaper, providing a reducing atmosphere for the glaze and staining its surface with carbon. During the past 25 years or so, Raku pottery has continued to gain popularity as a spectacular rendition of art pottery where nature creates infinitely unique and beautiful surface designs.
